Our island’s parks serve as venues for a vast array of festivals, fundraisers, concerts and other events throughout the year. This weekend, we’re lucky to have two very special events scheduled to take place on Daniel Island that showcase our beautiful parks. Make plans to come out and join in the fun!

Evening at Etiwan Park
Friday, May 13
The Charleston Parks Conservancy is celebrating all things parks this week with a series of free events in parks throughout the city. On Friday, the celebration comes to Daniel Island for an evening of music and stargazing at Etiwan Park. The festivities begin at 6:30 pm. Pack a picnic and bring a blanket to enjoy the setting as the sun goes down. After sunset, “Lowcountry Stargazers” will present a stargazing program with the aid of an assortment of special equipment. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required. Concert in the Park
Saturday, May 14 | Smythe Park

A favorite Daniel Island tradition, the Concert in the Park takes place each May on the banks of the lake at Smythe Park. Pack a picnic and grab a spot early – the best spots will go quickly. The highlight of the evening is a performance by Jeremy Davis and The Equinox Jazz Orchestra, who are sure to have the crowd dancing under the stars once again this year. A picnic contest will be judged starting at 6 pm (prizes, including a donation to the grand prize winners’ charity of choice, will be awarded for the best spreads). The concert starts at 7 pm. The event is free and open to the public.

Work Begins on Daniel Island’s Newest Park

Within a year, Daniel Island will have a brand-new park on the Wando River to add to its diverse collection of parks and open spaces. Work began earlier this month on Governor’s Park following a groundbreaking ceremony attended by Charleston Mayor Joe Riley and other city officials.

When complete, the $4 million city park will be a wonderful new venue for residents and visitors. Set on a 40-acre site on the banks of the Wando River next to the Family Circle Tennis Center, the park will incorporate a Grand Lawn area, stage, soccer and baseball fields (lit for evening play), a crabbing dock, picnic areas and an enclosed dog run area. The City of Charleston’s recreation department has plans to use the new park as a venue to expand its offering of recreational programs for all ages. Governor’s Park will also be a wonderful setting for concerts, festivals and other special events.

Completion of Governor’s Park is expected by next fall. This is just the latest addition to Daniel Island’s offering of hundreds of acres of parks and open greenspace. Located throughout the island within walking distance to all neighborhoods, the island’s parks provide residents with a vast array of recreational opportunities, from sports and active play to picnics, fishing, running, walking and relaxing.

Stay tuned for more information on the opening of Governor’s Park next year!

Daniel Island is known for its commitment to parks, trails and open spaces. In fact, more than 400 acres of parks are integrated throughout the island’s landscape. In this video – the first in a series about the island’s many parks – Jeff Elliott, Senior Project Manager for the island’s master developer, talks about the highlights of Simmons Park, located in the heart of downtown Daniel Island.
