May 6, 2009
As the days get longer, and the temperatures rise, island residents and visitors have an exciting line up of concerts to look forward to. In addition to live entertainment each Thursday night at the Daniel Island Farmers’ Market, there are two free concerts coming to the island’s parks and some big names coming to the Family Circle Tennis Center this summer.

On Saturday, May 16th residents and visitors of all ages will enjoy the sounds of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra from the scenic grounds of Smythe Park. Pack a picnic and come early to stake out your spot and enjoy the park as the sun begins to set. Food and beverages from Ted’s Butcherblock and frozen treats from Mr. Koolie will be available for purchase. The free CSO concert starts at 7:30 p.m.

On May 21 Grammy-winning country music super duo Sugarland will ignite the stadium at the Family Circle Tennis Center. Comprised of Jennifer Nettles and guitarist Kristian Bush, Sugarland has sold over 5 million records and received awards from America’s top music academies since 2004 when they leapt onto the country scene. The concert starts at 7 p.m., and tickets start at $45.

The music continues the following night when The Wailers make an appearance on the Tennis Center’s new Veranda stage at 7 p.m. on May 22. Together with Bob Marley, the Wailers have sold over 250 million albums world-wide. Tickets are priced at $22.50 (advance price).

On May 23 Corey Smith will hit the Veranda stage at 7 p.m. Smith’s distinctive live performance style, pensive lyrics and soulful Southern voice will make a show you won’t want to miss. Tickets are available for $22.50 in advance.
The 208th Army Band of Concord, N.C. will perform a free concert of patriotic favorites in Etiwan Park in honor of Memorial Day on May 25 from 6-7:15 p.m. The event is part of the opening weekend festivities of Piccolo Spoleto, the City of Charleston’s official outreach program of Spoleto Festival USA. Bring a blanket and chairs and pack a picnic for this special community event.

The Tennis Center will turn things up a notch on Saturday, June 13th when it hosts a “Funk Fest” with Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, Guy featuring Aaron Hall, Doug E. Fresh, Debroh Cox and more. Gates open at 3 p.m., and the concert starts at 5. Tickets are available starting at $35.
