This past Saturday, October 10, saw a record high of 90 degrees in Charleston. While the rest of the country was starting to deal with snow, rain and cold temperatures, the sun was shining and there was a nice breeze blowing on Daniel Island as more than 4,500 folks came out to enjoy this year’s 9th Annual Park Day festival!
Check out this short video from this year’s Park Day, created by Amy Tilden of Essence of Memories: Photography in Motion.
And Pat Stuckart Photography took some great photos of this year’s event and sent them in to My Island Town. Take a look!

Park Day is back! For the ninth year, thousands of Daniel Island and Charleston residents and visitors will descend upon Children’s Park on Daniel Island for a day of family-filled fun including food, music, games and much, much more!
Festivities at this year’s Park Day will include live entertainment by the Islanders and the Electric Company. Activities and events include everything from pumpkin painting and children’s crafts, dance contests and gardening exhibits to a “Wild Kingdom” showcasing a petting zoo, exotic and native birds, reptiles and more. There will also be jump castles, pony rides, bungee trampolines, a climbing wall and tons of activities for all ages! And it’s all in the name of giving back to the community: Proceeds from Park Day events benefit more than 30 area non-profit organizations.

A variety of restaurants and vendors will be offering Lowcountry treats and other favorites, including barbecue, oysters, fresh shrimp, ice cream, pizza, boiled peanuts and more. Football fans can catch the day’s games on the big screens at the Island House Sports Pub. Beer and other beverages will be available for sale throughout the day.
And don’t forget to bring your four-legged family member to the Dog Showcase, which will feature a Dog Spa with wonderful spa services for your dog, outdoor café with dog treats, pet training advice, and other dog related activities. Representatives from seven animal rescue groups will also be on hand with dogs available for adoption!

HEALTHY LIVING: Fueling Your Body

Bo Taylor, Fitness Manager at the Daniel Island Club
It takes a lot of energy to transform your body. Successfully managing your energy level is a must when dealing with high change situations in life. Eating smaller meals every three hours boosts energy. This keeps blood sugar normal and increases metabolism to help lose weight. It’s easy to upset the balance of blood sugar by skipping meals or waiting too long to eat. When blood sugar levels are normal, you feel good and energized. When they fall, energy and mood drop. Eating a healthy diet every three hours helps to positively alter your brain chemistry and stabilize your moods.
Eating these smaller meals is not the same as “grazing”. Grazing is eating small amounts almost continuously throughout the day. It can actually lead to spikes in your blood sugar, which can cause low energy and bad moods. When you eat a large meal every 5 – 6 hours, you provide a lot of fuel all at once in your system and set the stage for more dramatic blood sugar imbalances. The excess energy does not get used up and instead is stored as fat. Smaller, more frequent meals deliver your body adequate, manageable amounts of fuel spread evenly through the course of a day.
A meal or snack needs to be composed of a combination of important food groups: protein, fiber, complex carbohydrates, healthy fats, vegetables, fruit and whole grains. Protein will help you build muscle, increases satiety, curb hunger and make you feel satisfied. Fiber will also help you feel satisfied. Complex carbohydrates and whole grains digest slowly and deliver a steady supply of energy for the next three-hour spurt. Fat delivers you a burst of energy long after you have eaten it.
Vegetables and fruit help you feel energized. Be mindful of portion control and be careful that you’re not increasing calories. Eat normal portions or split a normal portion into two meals. Plan meals and snacks ahead of time. After a week or so of eating every three hours you will have more energy and feel better, too. Any inconvenience or fear about changing will be trans- formed into eager anticipation!
A Musical Evening on Daniel Island

I was fortunate to have recently participated in a magical event held on Daniel Island. The Chamber Music Charleston opened their new season with its House Concert Series, which on Tuesday, September 29 was held at the home of Tara and Steven King on beautiful Ralston Creek on Daniel Island. Approximately 45 people attended this intimate wind quintet performance, which featured works by Beethoven.
“The houses on Daniel Island are phenomenal…they are large with open floor plans – very well suited for chamber music with high ceilings, beautiful architecture,” said Sandra Nikolajevs, director of Chamber Music Charleston. “When we think about doing a house concert, the important elements are of course the music and the musicians but also the architecture of the home and the friendliness of the community.” And based on these elements, the concert and socializing were indeed a huge success!
The concert lasted close to an hour, followed by drinks and appetizers on the back patio of the King home, which overlooks Ralston Creek and the surrounding marsh. Both new and old friends enjoyed a perfect evening of amazing weather, stars and moon overhead, and ethereal music.
Following the event, I headed to Wasabi, a new restaurant in downtown Daniel Island, for a glass of wine and some fabulous sushi with some friends. All in all, this was an evening that I won’t forget anytime soon!
Make sure you don’t miss the next performance in the Daniel Island series!
